About Mr. Impatiens

Mr. Impatiens is none other than Derick Pitman. He lives in Sacramento, California, where his greenhouse and garden overflow with Impatiens and many other horticultural gems. Derick has been collecting and studying Impatiens for nearly 20 years. He loves reading and searching for any kind of information on these fabulous plants, whether it is scientific or horticultural, so he has amassed a great deal of information and is always happy to share his knowledge with others.

Derick is currently working with the Strybing Botanical Gardens in San Francisco, where he takes great pains to grow and bring more Impatiens species into cultivation. He has shared them with Cistus Nursery, Kartuz’s Greenhouses, Annie’s Annuals, and Plant Delights Nursery to help in the distribution of these wonderful plants to people who want to grow them. His collection can also be found at the Strybing plant sales, various mail-order nurseries, and even E-Bay.

Derick is also a freelance garden writer and lecturer. His articles appear in magazines such as Fine Gardening, Horticulture, and Pacific Horticulture. He has provides consultation to other authors.

Besides growing Impatiens, he grows many other plants such as Begonias, Gesneriads, Ferns, and Aroids to name a few. His first love are plants in the Acanthaceae family, which include his beloved Justicia carnea, given to him as a cutting when he was a small boy and still with him to this day.
